The first MLB Spring Training games of 2016 are only days away, with the first game televised scheduled for Sunday, February 28 when the University of Tampa Spartans take on the Philadelphia Phillies at 1:05 ET. MLB.TV Premium subscribers can watch this and many other spring training games on Roku and other connected devices - and that subscription is $20 less than last season. If you're interested in only one team, the MLB.TV Single Team subscription is available for $84.99 per year.

In addition to select spring training games, subscribers can watch over 2,430 regular season games, live or on-demand (subject to local blackout restrictions). The MLB.TV Roku channel is already showing the 2016 games - no login is needed to view the schedule of available games.

A premium subscription includes a free subscription to the At Bat Premium app for supported iOS devices and select Android smartphones and tablets.

A new feature, Follow Your Team, will soon be available for
MLB.TV Premium subscribers in select areas. This feature will let you watch you favorite out-of-market club games without blackouts, if you subscribe to a local Regional Sports Network on cable or satellite.

Cricket fans in the U.S. will have expanded coverage of live international cricket matches through an expansion of a relationship between Willow TV International and Sling TV and it's parent DISH. International Cricket Council (ICC) events will now be included at no additional charge to Sling TV and DISH customers who receive the Willow cricket channel, starting with the ICC World Twenty20 2016, which begins March 8, 2016.

The Willow cricket channel is included with the Sling TV World Sports package and South Asian Sling International packages. Willow offers HD streaming of some of the world’s most popular cricket matches and events, including ICC, India, Pakistan, Australia, South Africa, West Indies and other top teams, to cricket fans in the U.S. through Sling TV packages on Roku LT and higher streaming media players. The Sling TV packages are also available on many other connected devices, including Amazon Fire TV players, Chromecast, Xbox One, Android and iOS devices, and computers.

The announcement by Sling TV and Dish quoted Chris Kuelling, senior vice president of programming, as saying "We are proud to have supported the launch of the Willow cricket channel in 2010, and by extending this longstanding relationship, we are not only bringing our customers the best in live cricket for years to come, we're delivering on our commitment to make Sling TV and DISH 'your home for cricket.' With this agreement we are now able to bring U.S. viewers the most comprehensive cricket offering in the market, all in high definition.”

"In just over five years since we launched Willow on DISH, we have expanded our coverage of live international cricket to unprecedented levels," said Vijay Srinivasan, CEO of Willow TV International. PBS is launching a new 24/7 children’s service later this year, including a new TV channel and free live stream on Roku and other digital platforms. The live stream will complement on-demand clips and full episodes, which will continue to be available for free on the PBS KIDS app and PBS KIDS Roku channel, which is consistently one of the top 25 most-watched Roku channels.

Following the initial launch of the live stream, an integrated games feature will be added to allow toggling between a PBS KIDS show and an activity that extends learning. The PBS KIDS 24/7 channel will include popular shows like Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, Odd Squad, Wild Kratts, and Dinosaur Train. Also included will be new series Nature Cat and Ready Jet Go! Splash, a series from The Jim Henson Company, will premiere in Fall 2016. The schedule of children’s programming on the primary PBS channel will be different from the 24/7 channel.

The PBS KIDS 24/7 channel will be available to local PBS affiliates for local TV broadcast in addition to being available on Roku, computers, and a variety of mobile devices, tablets and over-the-top platforms such as Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Xbox One and Chromecast. PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger said in a press release that "The new PBS KIDS 24/7 channel and live stream offered by local member stations ensure that educational media is available to all families, all the time and via a platform that works for them. Given that 54% of all children nationwide do not have the opportunity to attend preschool, providing access is a critical element of our public service mission.”

Sling TV, which offers live streaming of many popular sports, news, movie and entertainment cable TV channels, has made a number of recent changes to their service. Local Now has been added to the Roku app, ABC network and local programming is available in select areas, and Newsy, Viceland, and Flama have been added to the "Best of Live TV" subscription package. Also, ABC Family has been rebranded as Freeform. If you haven't checked out Sling TV in awhile, read on for details on all of these recent additions and changes.

Local Now available on Roku devices

Local Now, an ad-free channel from The Weather Channel, provides current local news, weather, sports and traffic updates in 207 markets. The channel cycles through four information categories, all updated in real time:

60 Now! - A one-minute segment of clips of breaking news and current events
Weather - Current conditions, regional doppler radar for the last three hours, and the latest 7-day forecast
Traffic - A traffic map showing relative speeds on area highways, a list of incidents and events, and conditions of key area routes
News & Sports - News and sports headlines, along with games schedules for local and regional pro and college sports teams

Local Now detects your current location based on the IP address of your Internet connection, so it will always give local updates, even when you travel with your Roku. Previously available only on select devices, Local Now started rolling out to Roku devices on March 3 and is included as part of the basis Best of Live TV package.

ABC local and network programming available

Although Sling TV CEO Roger Lynch stated last October that broadcast networks would not be added to Sling TV in the short-term, ABC has been quietly added as part of the $5 per month "Broadcast Extra" bundle in select markets. Currently, this includes Chicago, Fresno-Visalia, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Raleigh-Durham, San Francisco (check for updates here). Due to local affiliate agreements, it's likely that additional cities will have to be added piecemeal, with a national agreement unlikely, but the addition of a live streaming broadcast network on an over-the-top device is precedent setting.

Newsy and Flama added to Sling TV basic package

The Best of Live TV package has added two additional channels aimed at Millennials, Newsy and Flama.

Newsy provides short segments covering world and national news, culture, tech, science, entertainment, sports, policy and other current events. Newsy does not do its own reporting, but pulls its coverage from many different media sources. This offers the advantage of unbiased newscasts that present varying perspectives on the latest headlines. Newsy on Sling TV is currently an on-demand channel, but the live feed is promised to be added in the coming months. Best of Live TV subscribers have also gained access to content from Univision's Flama, billed as "an English-language digital video destination designed exclusively for U.S. born Hispanic Millennials." This on-demand channel features short-form videos focused on comedy, entertainment, music, and food. More information on Flama can be found here.

H2 dropped, Viceland added

A&E Networks, which recently purchased a stake in Vice Media, has replaced HISTORY spin-off H2 with a new channel called Viceland. More cerebral shows like "How the States Got Their Shapes,""Modern Marvels," and "America Unearthed," have been replaced with decidedly racier subjects. Viceland shows include "F..., That's Delicious,""Weediquette,""Balls Deep," and "Gaycation." Viceland, like H2, is part of the Sling TV Best of Live TV package.

ABC Family is now Freeform

ABC Family was rebranded as Freeform in January in an effort to "evolve the young-skewing network past traditional family viewing and toward its target audience of... those in the life stage spanning ages 14 to 34," as stated in a Variety article announcing the change. In that article, network president Tom Ascheim stated that the network's programming won't change, even though they are trying to move beyond the "family" and "wholesome" image connected with ABC Family. Freeform has added shows, including addiction drama "Recovery Road" and saga series "Shadowhunters." Popular shows still on Freeform after the name change include "Young and Hungry,""The Fosters," and "Baby Daddy."

GameCenter– The epicenter of NCAA March Madness Live has been re-engineered to provide fans with an immersive live video experience featuring improved navigation, Google Cast and Airplay support and more curated social content from the Coke Zero™ NCAA March Madness Social arena.

Video on Demand– This year's enhanced video on demand capabilities allow fans to access classic tournament moments, match-up analysis, game previews, top plays, featured videos and more.

Capital One NCAA March Madness Bracket Challenge– This year, the official bracket game of March Madness – available via desktop, smartphones and tablets – is upgrading with new game features and more tools to help fans make their bracket picks as well as a chance to enter into a sweepstakes to attend the 2017 Final Four® in Phoenix. In addition, this is the only bracket game to integrate access to the live video stream of every match-up during the tournament.

Additional NCAA March Madness Live content will include “excitement” alerts for big moments throughout the tournament, as well as fan-favorite features including live game scoring, the official bracket, real-time game alerts for their favorite school, the Coke Zero NCAA March Madness Social Arena and personal channel lineup features. M-Go, Roku's embedded streaming movie service, will soon be re-branded as FandangoNOW. Fandango, a movie ticketing service owned by NBCUniversal, acquired M-Go from Dreamworks Animation and Technicolor in January of this year.

Variety reports that Fandango plans to use FandangoNOW as a way to boost revenue by combining video-on-demand with sales of tickets for in-theater movies. One of the new offerings will reportedly be the sale of "super tickets" that would bundle theater tickets with digital home-entertainment content, collectible memorabilia, and other bonuses. Fandango also recently agreed to acquire Flixster and Rotten Tomatoes from Warner Bros. Entertainment, adding to it's content for movie watchers.

For M-Go users, you should see the re-branding by the end of March, which will include the replacement of M-Go with FandangoNOW on Roku devices. FandangoNOW will continue offering the same movies and TV shows that you've been seeing on M-Go. According to Roku, Inc. you will not need to make any changes to your Roku device, and you will not need to create a new account. Your M-Go account will be automatically transitioned to FandangoNOW. Any movies and TV shows you've rented or purchased, along with any M-Go credits you may have, will roll over to your FandangoNOW account.

What if your Roku remote is one with an M-Go button? Unlike the dead Rdio button on many remotes, M-Go will continue to work - it will launch FandangoNOW.
