RokuGuide Channel Description: From the creator of the MaddyGTV Roku channel comes this all-animation channel filled with independently-produced cartoons. The cartoons are all of professional quality and the video stream is excellent. MaddyG also promises that all content is G-rated and safe for the entire family.

The channel launches in live-stream mode, but the back arrow on your Roku remote will bring up the video-on-demand menu where you'll find the following categories:

• Movies - Over a dozen feature-length animated films, most between 1 and 1-1/2 hours in length. Titles include Pup (2013), the story of Blacky, a black sheep and terror of the farm and Kanuto, a sheepdog that loves her, in an adventure where they meet an opera-singing cow, a fashion designer wolf, illegal sewing spiders, a weird couple of birds from some famous singing TV reality show contest, and a peculiar pack of dogs.
• Cartoon Serials - Three 22-minute episodes of the series Pocket Dragon Adventures, a 1996 syndicated series about a group of very small dragons who live with a kindly old wizard.
• Shorts - Over five dozen animated short films, listed on the channel as "award-winning."
• Vintage Cartoons - Public domain animations, including between two and six episodes each of Betty Boop, Captain Nemo, Casper the Friendly Ghost, Popeye, and Superman.

RokuGuide Channel Description: NRJ is a private French radio station. In case you're wondering, NRJ is (according to Wikipedia) an acronym for Nouvelle Radio Jeune (New Youth Radio) but is pronounced as énergie in French (or energy in English). The station broadcasts in several countries, but on this Roku channel you will find not only the live NRJ feed but also 139 genre-, artist- and period-specific music streams.

RokuGuide Channel Description: Giniko TV explains their service as this: "Giniko provides a selection of the best TV channels from around the world. Giniko lets you watch live sports, news, entertainment and more from any device... By capturing over-the-air TV channels from locations around the world and re-streaming them in full quality, Giniko has become the premier destination for free live TV on the internet. We are not a content provider ourselves, but provide free access to publicly-available satellite channels to viewers who want to consume a diverse array of content on internet-connected devices."

The Giniko TV streams are available on the Giniko Plus TV private Roku channel, as well as on web browsers, Android smartphones, iOS devices, BlackBerry, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Google TV. To view any content, you will need to create a free Giniko TV account, install and launch Giniko Plus TV on your Roku, then sign into your account from within the Roku channel.

Giniko Plus TV currently lists 292 channels, although you will find that a number of the channels are offline. In particular, well-known cable channels such as HISTORY and Travel Channel are offline, while religious streams and channels that offer free Internet streams such as QVC are operational. Streams from outside the U.S. are also more likely to be functional. The most likely users of Giniko TV will perhaps be those from other countries who want to watch TV from their native land. If you're from Yemen or Equatorial Guinea, you'll find broadcasts from those countries and many others.

In fact, the 292 listed channels cover nearly four dozen countries. The largest number (91) originate from the United States, although you'll find 36 channels from Turkey, 23 from Iran, 22 from United Arab Emirates, and 19 from Afghanistan. All other countries have five or less channels. In addition to the live streams, you'll find video-on-demand for many channels. The VOD offerings are provided DVD-style, recorded in 1-hour increments over the last few days. You won't find any program information, only the date and time of each hour-long video.

All channels are listed at www.giniko.com/watch-all-channels.php. The website states that sign-up is "free for a limited time." After creating a free account and logging in, the website indicates that "Premium G+" channels are available by subscribing for $9.95 per month. However, if you try to subscribe you'll be asked to first log out; after logging out, the only option is to create a free account or to sign in with your existing account. From that we surmise that Giniko TV service is still under development, and that paid subscriptions will be available in the future.

FEES: None currently, although the website states that Premium G+ channels require a $9.95/month subscription.

RokuGuide Channel Description: As one would expect, the Science Fiction and Beer private Roku channel covers two topics: sci-fi movies and beer. The channel is top-heavy in regard to sci-fi, with eight vintage B movies that include Voyage to the End of the Universe (1963), aka Ikarie XB 1, described on the channel as a "Czeck SF film that was more or less successfully dubbed into English;"Invasion of the Bee Girls (1973), described as "Bees. Breasts. Murders. Compelling television;" and Robot Monster (1953) - "A gorilla suite. A diving helmet. Best movie robot EVER."

Beer is covered in a single 14-minute video titled "My Beer Equipment" in which the channel developer provides "a short walk-through of the equipment I use to make beer." There is also a 22-second intro called "Science Fiction and Beer Talk Show Titles" for what we assume is a yet-to-be-born podcast that will cover the two topics in detail. If you like to get drunk and watch bad science fiction movies, stay tuned to find out whether this channel develops into something more.

Sling TV has made a number of additions to their over-the-top streaming service this week. If you've ever been frustrated by Roku's search function, which searched only a handful of the top movie channels - most of which were fee-based services - you'll be pleased to learn that Roku has greatly expanded their on-device search. Searches from the Roku home screen now return results from over 50 channels, and those results also include news videos from several sources.

If you haven't used the Roku search function before, you'll find it on the home screen of your Roku device or Roku TV. If you are searching for a movie or TV show, enter a title word to produce a list of matches. Select a title and you'll see a list of the Roku channels (out of the 50+ covered by the expanded search engine) where you can view it, along with the price (free movies are identified as such). Enter the name of an actor or producer and you can navigate to a list of movies or TV shows with that person in the credits. From there, you can also find out where the video can viewed.

There are two options for searching news videos. You can enter a search term or a date. As shown in the accompanying screenshot, a search for Brexit returns a list of videos about that topic.

If you want to see all news videos for a given day, just enter the month and date as shown in this screenshot.

There are some limitations to the news search. For example, you cannot filter search results to specific news channels. You may want to see only today's business headlines, but as the above screenshot shows, you may have to wade through videos about snakes eating beavers to get to what you want. For the casual browser, though, the search-by-date function provides some usefulness.

One final note on searching: You can also use Roku Search to find a specific channel by entering the channel's name. To limit your search to channels only, go to Streaming Channels from your Roku's home menu, then use the Search Channels function found there.

However, I have my doubts about the search engine being fully updated with all videos from all of these channels. In one of my search tests I looked for "Aerial America," available on Smithsonian Channel, which is shown in Roku's list of searchable channels. Roku Search told me that episodes are available only on Amazon Video and VUDU. This may be because Roku searches only complete seasons and not individual episodes. However, I performed other searches on movie titles and the results did not include a channel that I confirmed carried that title.

Sling TV tested a beta service in April that allowed simultaneous streaming to multiple devices. That service substituted FOX and FOX Sports channels for ESPN and Disney channels on the original single-stream service. The beta phase is over and is now called Sling Blue, and it now includes NBC, USA, Bravo, Syfy, BBC America, and BBC World News. Sling Blue also includes live, local NBC broadcast stations in Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Hartford, Conn., Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Diego and Washington D.C. Access to on-demand programming will be available in a later update. Comcast SportsNet: California, Bay Area, Chicago and Mid-Atlantic is also coming soon, and Sling TV expects to add local content from NBC affiliates in the future on a market-by-market basis.

The new Sling Blue, with over 40 channels, is $25 per month - that's a five dollar increase over the beta cost, but the beta did not include the additional channels names above. However, customers who signed up during the beta phase will receive the additional channels found in Sling Blue and their price will remain $20 per month with their current subscription.

The original single-stream service is now called Sling Orange and includes BBC America in the lineup. Sling Orange remains at $20 per month for more than 25 channels. If you want all those new channels on Sling Blue but just can't do without Disney and ESPN, you can sign up for Orange+Blue, which includes all channels from both services, for $40 per month. What the Orange+Blue package boils down to is you're paying an extra $15 above the Blue rate for access to ESPN, ESPN 2, Disney Channel, and Freeform.

Roku users wanting to watch the 2016 Summer Olympic Games are in luck, whether they have cut their cable cord or not. NBCUniversal will broadcast 2,084 hours of the Summer Olympics across 11 networks. You will need to subscribe to either Sling TV or have a qualifying subscription to a cable or satellite TV provider for live coverage, but others users can still watch highlights through the NBC Sports channel.

Summer Olympics 2016 on Roku's NBC Sports channel

If you subscribe to a participating cable or satellite TV service, you can access live and on-demand content using the NBC Sports app. NBC will live stream a total of 4,500 hours of programming, including all Olympic competition, not only to the Roku channel but also to the app on Apple TV, Fire TV, Samsung TV, Windows 10, Xbox One, and Android and iOS mobile devices. In addition to live coverage, the NBC Sports app features full event replays and video highlights. You can browse video on demand by individual sport.

Olympics coverage is offered as a separate channel within the app. Press the * button on your Roku remote to switch between the Olympics, Sports, and Spanish channels within NBC Sports. If you have not authenticated the channel, press the * button, select the Sign In option, then follow the on-screen instructions. Summer Olympics 2016 on Sling TV

Sling Blue provides access to NBC Sports Network, Bravo, and USA Network. Sling Blue subscribers in Chicago, Dallas, Hartford, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, San Diego and Washington, D.C. can also watch the local NBC broadcast. CNBC and MSNBC are part of the World News Extra add-on, but from August 1 through the last event on these networks, all Sling Blue customers can access a free preview of MSNBC and CNBC. The Golf Channel is available to Sling Blue customers who subscribe to the Sports Extra add-on pack, and Sling Blue subscribers with the Best of Spanish TV package can watch Spanish coverage on NBC Universo.

NBC - Beginning with the Opening Ceremony on Friday, August 5, through the Closing Ceremony on Sunday, August 21, NBC will broadcast over 260 hours of Olympics coveage. NBC’s primetime, daytime and late night coverage will feature many of the most popular sports, including swimming, gymnastics, track and field, diving, beach volleyball, volleyball, and the men’s and women's basketball finals. You'll also be entertained with athlete features, segments on the host city and country, and interviews with medal-winning athletes. NBC primetime programming will air most days from 8 p.m. - midnight ET/PT; daytime from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. ET/PT; late night from 12:35 a.m. – 1:35 a.m. ET/PT; and replays from 1:35 a.m. – 4:30 a.m. ET/PT. (Available to Sling Blue subscribers in Chicago, Dallas, Hartford, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, San Diego and Washington, D.C.)

NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) - NBCSN will carry 330 hours of Olympic programming covering more than 20 sports, focusing on Team USA women’s soccer and Team USA men’s and women’s basketball. (Available to Sling Blue subscribers.)

Bravo - Bravo will be the home of Olympic tennis, with 94.5 hours of live coverage from Saturday, August 6, through the women’s singles final on Saturday, August 13 and the men’s singles final on Sunday, August 14. Bravo will televise more than 12 hours Olympic tennis, from 9:30 a.m. ET until 10 p.m. ET, during each of the first five days. Each of the final four days will consist of eight hours of coverage, from 11 a.m. ET to 7 p.m. ET. (Available to Sling Blue subscribers.)

USA Network - USA Network will televise 110.5 hours of programming from Rio, with coverage that begins two days before the Opening Ceremony with women’s soccer on Wednesday, August 3, and concluding on Sunday, August 21, the final day of the Games. USA will present eight hours of coverage, from 9 a.m. ET to 5 p.m. ET, on most weekdays. along with weekend programming. USA's coverage of the Rio games will include men's basketball, beach volleyball, cycling, rowing, synchronized swimming, volleyball, water polo, and more. (Available to Sling Blue subscribers.)

CNBC - CNBC will televise 42 hours of coverage beginning on Saturday, August 6, and concluding on Friday, August 19. CNBC's weekday Olympic broadcasts will be from 5-8 p.m. ET, after completion of business and financial programming. The network will showcase elimination-round coverage of basketball and volleyball, as well as archery, beach volleyball, cycling, rugby, water polo, wrestling, and many more sports. MSNBC - MSNBC will broadcast 78.5 hours of Summer Games programming, including men's basketball, beach volleyball, rugby, soccer, volleyball, and water polo, and other sports. Coverage begins on Saturday, August 6, and concludes on Saturday, August 20. Ten of the network’s 15 days of coverage will be from Noon ET to 5 p.m. ET. Golf Channel - For the first time in 112 years, Golf is part of the Olympics, and Golf Channel will present 115 hours of tournament programming, featuring in-depth analysis and live coverage of the Men's and Women's Olympic Golf competition. (Men's coverage is Thursday, Aug. 11 – Sunday, Aug. 14, and Women's coverage is Wednesday, Aug. 17 – Saturday, Aug. 20. Golf Channel will stream nearly 300 hours of Olympic programming. Sling TV, a popular service that offers many popular cable TV channels on Roku and many other connected devices, has announced that NFL Network and NFL RedZone will be available in time for the kickoff of the NFL regular season. The annual National Football League Kickoff game is set for Thursday, September 8, with the defending Super Bowl 50 champion Denver Broncos hosting the Carolina Panthers. The rest of the league will play their opening weekend games on Sunday, September 11, and Monday, September 12.

Sling TV customers who subscribe to NFL RedZone will be able to catch every touchdown from every game starting Sunday, September 11. Sling TV customers will also have access to extensive 24/7 coverage from NFL Network, a 24/7, year-round NFL news channel that features original programming like A Football Life and The Timeline, along with NFL news and analysis from Total Access, NFL GameDay, and more content for NFL fans. NFL Network will also deliver exclusive Thursday Night Football games, popular shows such as NFL GameDay Morning, A Football Life, and TIMELINE. NFL Network will also stream Good Morning Football, a new morning show that will air live each weekday morning from New York City.
