Cordcutter News Brief - What's Coming to Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu in November; streaming TV bundles hit a wall; cord cutting accelerates; FOX Nation to launch Nov. 27th, and more!

Cordcutter News BriefsIn this week's collection of recent cord-cutting news items from around the web: What's Coming to Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu in November; Netflix remains no. 1 U.S. streaming service; streaming TV bundles hit a wall; cord cutting accelerates as pay TV loses 1 million customers; Comcast is developing a video-streaming platform; NBC launches a new streaming network; FOX Nation to launch on November 27th, and more.

Netflix Remains No. 1 U.S. Streaming Service

According to a Parks Associates ranking, Netflix remains the country's No. 1 subscription streaming service after closing the third quarter with 58.46 million U.S. customers, reports Multichannel News. " Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu continue to hold the top-three slots, with HBO Now and Starz moving into the top five. Notably, virtual MVPDs Sling TV and DirecTV, which have saw marked growth deceleration in the third quarter, round out the rankings in the Nos. 9 and 10 slots." Parks Associates senior director of research added, "According to our estimates, Amazon has more Prime Members than Netflix has subscribers. However, when you consider only those Prime Members that use Prime Video, Netflix is the largest."

Streaming TV Bundles, Once Seen as Industry Savior, Hit a Wall

Bloomberg says that rising prices from DirecTV Now and Sling TV contributed to a slowdown in new subscribers. "Dish Network Corp.'s Sling TV signed up just 26,000 new subscribers in the third quarter... after attracting 41,000 in the previous three months and 91,000 before that... Meanwhile, AT&T Inc.'s DirecTV Now added 49,000 subscribers last quarter, after signing up 342,000 customers in the prior three months." In addition to rising prices, Bloomberg reports that AT&T said on an earnings call last month that customers are 'seasonally shopping for shows' and 'jumping from promotion to promotion and really spinning in the industry between us, Hulu Live, YouTube TV."

Cord cutting accelerates as pay TV loses 1 million customers in largest-ever quarterly loss

Despite those slowdowns in streaming bundle signups, USA Today tells us to "Scratch the theory that cord cutting might be decelerating... Cable and satellite TV providers lost about 1.1 million subscribers during the July to September period, the largest quarterly loss ever – and the first time the industry lost more than 1 million subscribers in a quarter, according to media and telecommunications research firm MoffettNathanson." USA Today concludes they article by saying that "the verdict is: 'Cord cutting does not appear to be slowing at all,' [analysts] said."

Comcast is developing a video-streaming platform for broadband-only customers

"Comcast is planning to debut a product to broadband-only customers that will allow them to aggregate certain streaming apps, such as Netflix and Amazon Video," according to CNBC. "The product isn't quite a direct competitor to Roku or Apple TV because it won't allow customers access to hundreds of apps, including streaming TV bundles like AT&T's DirecTV Now or Dish's Sling... Rather, Comcast wants the device to be the hub to the connected home... In addition to aggregating streaming apps, the device will also allow customers to control anything that's connected to the Internet, including thermostats and smart-locks." The device will reportedly be launched in 2019, but a price has not been set.

NBC launches a new streaming network

The new network, called NBC News Signal, "will be available through NBC’s news mobile and over-the-top apps, as well as on other services including PlutoTV, YouTube, and Twitter," according to a TechCrunch article. "NBC is looking to reach a younger audience... The focus will be on the 'political and social issues in America,' the company says." According to NBC, the channel will have 24/7 news coverage starting in mid-2019.

FOX News to Launch FOX Nation on November 27th

That NBC announcement comes on the heels of the announcement by FOX News that they will launch their new FOX Nation on-demand service later this month. According to an earlier press release, "FOX Nation will present a fresh slate of daily short-form programming, including offerings such as Deep Dive featuring first rate political analysts and UN-PC co-hosted by conservative firebrand Britt McHenry and The Greg Gutfeld Show staple Tyrus." But while the new NBC service and similar OTT news services like CBSN are free, FOX Nation will be priced at $5.99 a month or $64.99 per year

Nintendo Wii streaming services are being discontinued

"The Wii U looks set to lose access to a host of third-party streaming services in the new year," reports TechRadar. "Streaming provider Netflix reportedly sent an email out to Wii users, explaining that it would be pulling the Netflix app from the Wii on January 31..." In addition, a Reddit post reportedly states that "Nintendo will be suspending 'all video streaming services on Wii', meaning that the Youtube, Hulu, Crunchyroll, and Amazon Prime Video will also be disappearing from the 2006 console." Note that these changes apply to the Wii, not the newer Wii U console won't be affected by the changes.

Xbox One loses broadcast TV streaming on iOS/Android

ArsTechnica reports that "Microsoft is removing an Xbox One feature that let users stream over-the-air TV broadcasts from a USB antenna to the Xbox app on iOS or Android." Users have been receiving the following message: "You may have streamed TV content using a USB TV tuner from your Xbox console to the Xbox app. In 30 days, the Xbox app on iOS and Android will no longer support this functionality. You will still be able to watch TV content on your Xbox One console and via streaming to the Xbox app on Windows 10."

Coming to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime in November 2018

"Christmas may be more than a month away," says Variety, "but that isn't stopping streaming platforms from adding some holiday cheer to their November lineups. Beginning with the animated film 'Angela’s Christmas' on Nov. 1, Netflix is adding several holiday movies to its streaming slate, including 'The Holiday Calendar,''The Princess Switch,' and 'A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding.' Hulu and Amazon Prime are also following suit with 'A Cinderella Christmas' on Nov. 15 and 'Christmas With the Kranks' on Nov. 1, respectively. "November is also seeing the premiere of several platform originals, including the final season of Netflix’s 'House of Cards' and Julia Roberts' Amazon Prime debut, 'Homecoming.' The documentary 'McQueen' is also joining Amazon's slate while Netflix will launch 'Doctor Strange,''Sixteen Candles,' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.' Hulu will see a similarly large influx of new films, including 'Goldeneye,” 'Amelie,” and 'Kick-Ass.'" Find the full list, including dates, here.

Cordcutter News Brief - Younger viewers bailing on traditional TV, Hulu to expand under Disney, HDHomeRun launches streaming TV service, Sling TV hits the reset button on pay TV, and more!

Cordcutter News BriefsIn this week's collection of recent cord-cutting news items from around the web: Younger viewers bailing on traditional TV, Hulu to expand when Disney buys Fox, HDHomeRun gets into the streaming TV business, WarnerMedia streaming service will launch domestically first, AT&T is inviting DirecTV Now users to test its upcoming streaming box, and Sling TV hits the reset button on pay TV.

Younger viewers bailing on traditional TV at alarming rate

"New Nielsen data show a widening gap in viewing behavior among young and old that's alarming some network executives," according to USA Today. "For the four weeks ending Oct. 28, coinciding with the start of the official TV season, the number of people ages 18 to 34 using TV has plunged 15% and is down 36% from 2014. The drop-off among teens – 18% from last year and 48% since 2014 – is even more pronounced." At the other end of the spectrum, there was only a 2% drop from 2017 for those 55 and older.

Major expansion coming to Hulu when Disney buys Fox

SlashGear says that Disney's acquisition of Fox could mean big things for Hulu, not just in terms of content, but also in terms of availability. "Disney CEO Bob Iger reveal his company's intention for Hulu in a recent call with investors... Iger is looking to grow Hulu's subscriber base, and one way to do that would be to roll out the service internationally." But what about the upcoming Disney+ service? "Even with Disney+ on the horizon, Disney wants to keep building up Hulu’s library – especially its original content offerings – separately. It's clear that Iger envisions a future where Hulu and Disney+ exist side-by-side." But don't expect an international offering any time soon, as Disney's acquisition of Fox isn't expected to close until sometime in 2019.

HDHomeRun gets into the streaming TV business with $35 Premium service

SiliconDust is known as a hardware and software company with devices for cordcutters like the HDHomeRun line of TV tuners and DVRS, but they're joining the streaming TV service with HDHomeRun Premium TV. According to Engadget, "The $35 per month setup augments channels a subscriber catches via antenna with traditional cable channels like CNN, Disney, Comedy Central, FX and TNT. At launch it includes 45 channels, and like other internet TV packages there are no contracts or other strings, while recording is handled just like any other channel in its software."

WarnerMedia Streaming Service Will Launch Domestically First

WarnerMedia plans to introduce its own streaming service next year, and Brent Lang and Henry Chu report for Variety that it "will launch domestically first, followed by a potential international rollout, and could feature content from outside providers." They go on to say that "WarnerMedia is hoping that its direct-to-consumer offering will enable it to become a major player in a space currently dominated by Netflix."

AT&T is inviting DirecTV Now users to test its upcoming streaming box

TheVerge reports that "According to AT&T, the device will automatically launch DirecTV Now when turned on, users will be able to download content from the Google Play Store, and it will come with Google Assistant support so users can control the device with their voice." In addition, "the device will run Android TV, support third-party streaming services, and come with a voice search remote."

FuboTV adding commercial-free streaming channels AMC Premiere and FX+

"Virtual MVPD FuboTV is adding commercial-free streaming services AMC Premiere and FX+ to its roster of premium add-ons for subscribers," reports FierceVideo. "FuboTV still trails bigger vMVPDs like Sling TV and DirecTV Now in terms of subscribers but the service is growing. The company recently revealed that it has nearly 250,000 subscribers which includes 30,000 subscribers added during the third quarter and marks more than 100% growth year over year compared to the 100,000 subscribers the service had back in September 2017."

Sling TV Hits the Reset Button on Pay TV

"Over-the-top (OTT) delivery isn't destroying the TV experience, it's reinvigorating it," says an editorial on StreamingMedia.com. "Kicking off the 2018 Streaming Media West conference, Warren Schlichting, executive vice president and group president for Sling TV, explored the ways streaming is leading to a healthier and happier business model for both providers and viewers." Schlichting said that "We believe at Sling that streaming TV can actually reverse the trend that we've seen in pay TV." TV won't go away, says StreamingMedia, but the old model will.

(90 seconds refers to the video length, NOT the length of time to prepare the dish!) There are also a few "tips" videos, such as How to Crimp Your Crust, and an interesting adult beverage made from the "perfect blend of rum and balsamic vinegar."

If you want to add some Southern flair to your holiday meal, Southern Food will show you how to make Original Southern Cornbread-Sage Dressing, Slow Cooker Green Beans Seasoned with Ham, and Baked Smothered Turkey Wings. If you or any of your family or guests have gone keto, Low Carb 360 has several Thanksgiving recipes to keep you on track. Turkey is naturally low-carb so you can find those recipes elsewhere, but this channel shows you how to make sides of Low Carb Cranberry Sauce and Low Carb Mexican Corn Bread,, and provides dessert ideas that include Low Carb Pumpkin Pie and Mini Pumpkin Cheesecake.

Those are only a few ideas from the entire collection of 200+ Food channels on Roku. Happy Thanksgiving from RokuGuide.com!

Cordcutter News BriefsIn this week's collection of recent cord-cutting news items from around the web: Everything coming to Netflix, Amazon Prime, and HBO Now in December; Plex streams Tidal music; AT&T details WarnerMedia streaming services; Discovery Channel, TLC and more are now on Sling TV; Amazon has a new way to record TV shows; the 9 best free streaming movie services, and more!

Everything coming to Netflix, Amazon Prime, and HBO Now in December

The Verge says that it's "a big month for Netflix original movies with Roma, Bird Box, and Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle... The service will also be adding Avengers: Infinity War to its lineup, along with The Lobster and the 11th season of Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown." Amazon Prime brings "the second season of the Emmy award-winning The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, the new series Vanity Fair, and... some incredibly impressive film library titles, including All the President's Men, Boogie Nights, David Fincher’s The Game, and one of the best — and scariest — films of the year, Ari Aster's Hereditary." And on HBO Now, "customers will get a number of films this month, including Inception, The Hangover, and Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One. The service will also be adding the documentary Say Her Name: The Life and Death of Sandra Bland, as well as the season finales for Camping, My Brilliant Friend, and season 2 of Room 104, amongst others."

Plex now streams cheap Tidal music subscriptions

Also from The Verge, we find that "Plex users can now stream Tidal music directly from the Plex app. Moreover, subscribers can save up to $60 a year on the price of both Tidal and Plex Pass subscriptions. Tidal's entire music catalog (including music videos and podcasts) is available on Plex. Better yet, it promises to integrate with your existing Plex music library."

AT&T Details Three Tiers of 2019 WarnerMedia Streaming Offering

"AT&T delivered its post-merger pitch to a roomful of Wall Street analysts, and shedding new light on its direct-to-consumer OTT service launching in late 2019," says Deadline Hollywood. "The still-unnamed WarnerMedia streaming service will include three levels, the company said. It will have an entry-level movie-focused package; a premium service with original programming and blockbuster movies; and a third service bundling content from the first two plus an extensive library of WarnerMedia and licensed content." No word on pricing.

Discovery Channel, TLC and More are Now on Sling TV

Sling TV has launched nine Discovery networks, including Discovery Channel, TLC, Investigation Discovery (ID) and more. "Discovery networks bring popular domestic and Spanish-language channels and diverse content for all age groups to Sling TV, and pricing for all service offerings remains the same. Plus, Sling TV will continue to add Discovery titles to its on-demand library in the future." Other networks, available in the base Orange or Blue or Sling Extras packages, include MotorTrend (formerly Velocity), American Heroes Channel, Destination America, Destination America, and Spanish networks Discovery en Español and Discovery Familia.

Americans are streaming 8 billion hours of content per month on connected TVs

"Today, more than two-thirds of U.S. homes have devices that are able to stream video," according to Nielsen and reported by Cnet. Nielson noted that "Americans are now streaming nearly 8 billion hours per month on connected TV devices like Roku, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV. What's more is that consumers ages 13 to 34 will spend twice the time streaming when watching on connected TV devices, compared with watching on the computer or mobile devices."

Amazon has a new way to record HD TV shows even if you don't pay for cable

CNBC reports on the Amazon Fire TV Recast that launched earlier this month. "It's meant for folks who no longer want to pay a cable bill but still want to record and watch TV shows from broadcast networks including ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS and The CW. Recast lets you record local TV shows that you can get for free over the air with an HD antenna, and then watch them on any TV with a Fire TV stick connected to it, or on your phone or tablet. "

AT&T May Sell 10% Stake in Hulu, Potentially Giving Disney More Control

"Disney might be set to gain even more control over Hulu," reports Variety. "AT&T said it is considering selling WarnerMedia's 10% stake in the streaming venture — which is worth as much as $930 million — as part of shedding nonstrategic assets to pay down its massive debt load... If AT&T sells the WarnerMedia stake in Hulu, that could bulk up Disney’s ownership in the streaming TV company — giving the Mouse House even more incentive to invest in Hulu and expand it to international markets."

‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer,’ ‘Angel’ And ‘Firefly’ Come To Facebook Watch

If you prefer to get you video entertainment through social media, you might like Deadline Hollywood's report that "Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly are coming to Facebook Watch through a deal with 20th Century Fox Television, as the social network looks to use the lure of nostalgia to attract viewers and spark conversation... Facebook users can host 'watch parties' from their Timeline, and virtually gather together a group of friends to watch episodes together." Every episode from every season will be available beginning today.

Watch movies for free: The 9 best streaming services

From Cnet, "[h]ere are nine services offering totally free -- and totally legal -- movies you can watch online. Just be prepared to sit through commercials, because that's how many of these services stay in business."

Cordcutter News BriefsIn this week's collection of recent cord-cutting news items from around the web: Hulu, AT&T to run ads when viewers hit pause, AT&T to thin out bundle and raise prices to $50-$60, Hopster is now on Sling, Amazon's Prime Video Channels to generate $1.7 billion in 2018, Hulu CEO says most linear cable TV networks will be gone in a decade, and more!

Hulu, AT&T to Run Ads in 2019 When Viewers Pause Their Streaming TV

Variety reports that "Hulu intends to unveil what it calls 'pause ads' in 2019. When a user chooses to stretch, or get a snack, [Jeremy Helfand, vice president and head of advertising platforms for Hulu] says, 'it's a natural break in the storytelling experience.' AT&T also has hopes to use the pause to lend new momentum to TV advertising. The company, which owns DirecTV and U-verse, expects to launch technology next year that puts a full-motion video on a screen when a user decides to take a respite."

Educational, Ad-free Kids Content from Hopster is Now on Sling

If you're looking for more options to keep the kids entertained, Sling has announced that Hopster is now available with or without a base subscription for $5/month. "Hopster features preschool-age programming that helps develop children's literacy and numeracy, making it a win-win for parents and kids. And, since it includes hundreds of on-demand titles available right at your fingertips, you'll never have to wait for a show to come on." Sling is the first live OTT service to launch Hopster which provides on-demand access to popular kids shows like Bob the Builder, Sesame Best Friends, and more.

Viewers Hate Swiss Cheese

StreamingMedia.com discusses comments made by Karen Leever, president of U.S. digital products for Discovery, during a keynote conversation at the TV of Tomorrow show in New York City. "She's not talking about actual cheese, of course, but when video on-demand (VOD) networks offer some episodes from some seasons, but not a complete run of anything. Viewers hate that: They want to get a complete season run or, better yet, complete series run."

YouTubeTV confirms poor streaming issues on Apple TV

BESTAppleTV says that is "has duplicated and confirmed issues of poor streaming quality with the live streaming service YouTubeTV on Apple TV 4K and non-4K models. The issues have been reported by customers since last Thursday. YouTube TV has acknowledged the issue and has said that they are working to fix the issues, but can’t say when a solution will be ready. 'Our engineers are working hard on a fix, but don't have an exact ETA yet,' a tweet from TeamYouTube read on Twitter Wednesday."

Amazon's Prime Video Channels Biz to Generate $1.7 Billion in 2018

Variety says that Amazon's "à la carte Prime Video Channels service is having a huge economic impact on the pay-TV business. According to new estimates from BMO Capital Markets, Amazon's Prime Video Channels will pull in $1.7 billion of revenue this year, more than double from last year's $700 million. That's poised to grow to $3.6 billion in 2020 worldwide."Prime Video Channels is a service that allows Amazon Prime and Prime Video members to purchase third-party channel subscriptions (like Showtime, Starz) and other streaming entertainment channels directly through Prime Video.

Hulu CEO: Most Linear Cable TV Networks Will Be Gone in a Decade

Another Variety report says that Hulu CEO Randy Freer predicted that "[t]he traditional pay-TV universe of 300-plus channels is going to shrink dramatically over the next 10 years... with maybe a dozen cable TV networks still standing... Freer believes the pay-TV lineup is due for a radical makeover. With the exception of live news and sports, everything else in the TV bundle will be distributed on-demand, said Freer."

AT&T’s New DirecTV Now Plan: ‘Thin Out’ Bundle, Reset Price Point to $50-$60

Multichannel News says that AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, speaking at the UBS Global Media and Communications conference, "said work is underway to 'thin the content out' on the DirecTV Now bundle and 'get the content out that's really relevant to the consumer.' Simultaneously, Stephenson seemed to indicate that further price hikes are in store for DirecTV Now, which already increased its base monthly fee from $35 to $40 over the summer. 'We’re talking $50 to $60,' he said."

Discovery to gain about 4M subscribers from Sling TV, Hulu deals

"Discovery Inc.'s recent deals putting its channels on streaming TV services Sling TV and Hulu with Live TV will be big contributors to Discovery’s audience totals," according to a FierceVideo report. "Discovery CEO David Zaslav spoke today at a UBS investor conference and said those launches, which include about five or six channels, will contribute approximately 4 million subscribers... Despite new distribution deals for Discovery networks, Zaslav said that Discovery Channel ratings have been down recently. He blamed the ratings declines during the third quarter in part on production issues with 'Fast N’ Loud' which will delay the show's return until 2019."

The Best Christmas Music Channels on Roku for 2018

The Best Christmas Music Channels on RokuIf it's Christmas music you want, Roku has it! Here are our favorite channels for holiday music for 2018.

Soma FMSomaFM - Our perennial favorite for Christmas music is the listener-supported and DJ-programmed SomaFM, which has four live-stream holiday music stations. Christmas Lounge, which seems to always show the largest number of listeners, stream laid-back holiday vibes with "chilled holiday grooves and classic winter lounge tracks" that are family-safe. As I update this article for 2018, DJ Rusty Hodge is playing an eclectic seasonal playlist that includes J-Boogie ("Dance of the Snowflake"), Eartha Kitt ("Santa Baby"), Dean Martin ("Silent Night"), and Oscar Peterson ("God Rest Ye Merry Gentlement").

SomaFM Christmas Rocks If that's a bit too mellow for your taste, SomaFM has other holiday choices. Christmas Rocks! is an indie/alternative holiday rock channel with artists that include Bruce Cockburn ("Joy to the World"), Woods ("Christmas Time is Here"), Kenny Laguna ("Home for Christmas") and Michael Lyons ("Last Christmas").

Xmas in Frisko is a "wacky and eclectic holiday mix, not for the easily offended" that this year is playing Bob Rivers ("Oh Come All Ye Grateful (Deadheads)"), Klezmatics ("Hanukah Tree"), Bob Wire & Chip Witson ("Santa's Got a Sharkskin Suit") and Found Sound Orchestra ("Santa's in a Hula").

Jolly Ol' Soul, meanwhile, brings some soulful holiday music from Baby Washington ("White Christmas"), Otis Redding & Carla Thomas ("New Year's Resolution"), Jimmy Reed ("Christmas Presents Blues"), Salsoul Orchestra ("Merry Christmas All"), and many other soul artists.

PandoraPandora - You will find a lot of variety on Pandora, with holiday music in nearly any category you can think of. To find the holiday stations, select Browse from the menu at the top of the Pandora home screen, then scroll down to the Moods and Activities section and select Holidays. There you'll find 54 (at the time this article was written) holiday stations. The station titled simply 'Christmas' is currently the most popular, showing a total of 60 million listeners. Other popular stations include Christmas Traditional, Today's Christmas, Classical Christmas and Country Christmas. Other stations in more "niche" categories include Tropical Holidays (Jimmy Buffett, anyone?), Christmas Rappin', Reggae Holidays, Bluegrass Christmas, and Folk Holidays.

TuneIn RadioTuneIn - To find the TuneIn holiday stations, go to the channel's home screen and scroll down to Music under "What do you want to listen to?" You could select Holiday Hits from the top of the screen, but scroll down to 'Tis The Season for that station plus Holiday Standards, Classical Holiday, Country Christmas, and Holiday Jazz. For more options, use the search function to search on "Christmas" which currently returns 75 results. You'll find Christmas radio stations from the U.S. and around the world.

iHeartRadioiHeartRadio - I know there are iHeartRadio users out there, but this channel has fallen off our list this year. Even though I'm logged in and connecting from the US, when I select the Holiday option under Music & Entertainment I receive an error that this content is not available in my country - major fail. Searching on "Christmas" returns only 10 results per category: 10 live stations, 10 artists, 10 songs. Also, missing from the search results are four the five custom Christmas stations, with only iHeartChristmas available. Gone are iHeartChristmas Classics, iHeartChristmas Rock, North Pole Radio, and iHeartChristmas Country, which are still available through a web browser.

Those are our top recommendations for streaming holiday music on Roku. Even though we have only three Roku channels on our ilst - SomaFM, Pandora, and TuneIn - you'll find more than enough holiday music on these channels to keep you entertained throughout the season. Check out our Roku Christmas Channels list for all holiday-specific channels. A complete list of Roku music channels can be found here.
