Cordcutter News BriefsIn this week's collection of recent cord-cutting news items from around the web: What's coming to Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime in June; Netflix shows said to be sending destructive messages to teens; Hulu now has 800,000 live TV subscribers; why Roku is the Internet video box leader, while Google is slipping; FOX Sports App to include World Cup games; FCC asks Amazon and eBay to stop selling pirate boxes; and more!

Variety tells uswhat's coming to Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime in June 2018. "Netflix kicks off the month with some fan favorites for the first blistering hot days of the summer with 'National Treasure,''Marvel Studios' Thor: Ragnarok,' and 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi...' Hulu offers its own dish of classics, including 'Apocalypse Now,''Carrie,' and 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly...' Amazon rounds out the month with some comedy flicks, including 'The Disaster Artist,''Nacho Libre,' and the entire 'Leprechaun' franchise."

Forbes reports that Chicago's "cloud tax" on streaming sServices has survived a legal challenge. Chicago's "streaming tax on Netflix and similar internet services, the first of its kind in the country... was a 9% surcharge for the privilege of streaming internet-based entertainment, including video, music and gaming services." The Liberty Justice Center filed a lawsuit challenging the tax.

"Netflix's Latest Shows For Teens Send Destructive Messages," claims Gabriella Patti in an article on The Federalist. Referencing the series "13 Reasons Why," and "The Kissing Booth," Patti argues that "[b]oth depict teen struggles and issues related to sex, bullying, and puberty in an overly dramatic and potentially harmful manner to anyone who watches them, but especially those in the high school audience the shows are geared toward."

"Hulu Hits 800,000 Live TV Subscribers,"says Variety. As for competitors, "AT&T's DirecTV Now tallied 1.46 million subscribers while Dish Network's Sling TV stood at 2.3 million as of the end of Q1 2018."

According to surveys by research firm Parks Associates and reported by Fortune, "only 14% of consumers who owned an Internet video streaming device used one from Google in the first quarter, down from 18% a year earlier and 21% two years ago..." Roku, meanwhile, "was steady as the market leader with 37% share, the same as last year and up from 33% two years ago." Parks' research explains "Why Roku Is the Internet Video Box Leader, While Google Is Slipping: Consumers say Roku's line up, which ranges from its $30 Express box to its $100 4K-capable Ultra, is the easiest to use."

"CheddarU comes to nine million students on over 600 campuses via 1,600 screens in public spaces and campus cable networks," according to a press release from the Cheddar news network. "In time for students to return to campus this August, Cheddar will broadcast live, non-partisan headline news, technology coverage, and startup stories to the newly rebranded CheddarU network."

"FOX updates FOX Sports App to include World Cup games,"according to WorldSoccerTalk, but there's good news and bad news. "The good news is that the app has added a lot of new functionality for sports fans. The bad news is that you won't be able to watch World Cup games with the app unless you have a cable or satellite TV subscription." If you've cut the cord, you can get Fox Sports app access with a trial subscription to DIRECTV NOW, Sling TV, and some other streaming TV services.

The FCC has asked Amazon and eBay to stop selling pirate boxes, says Forbes. "Moving to stamp out a fast-growing form of video piracy, the Federal Communications Commission has asked the chief executives of Amazon and eBay to step it up in removing sale listings for fake pay-TV boxes with fake FCC seals from their sites... The Commission is referring to the growing trend of consumers using otherwise legal software apps like Kodi with inexpensive set-top boxes and add-ons that let them access linear channels and on-demand content illegally. How to watch the 2018 FIFA World Cup on RokuThe 2018 FIFA World Cup kicks off today in Russia, with matches taking place until the July 15th finals. If you've cut the cord and are looking for a way to watch the action on your Roku, here are your options.

First, you need to know which networks are broadcasting the 2018 matches. Fox has exclusive English-language rights and will broadcast 38 matches on the Fox network and 26 matches on Fox Sports 1. NBC Universal owns the Spanish-language broadcast rights and will air 56 matches on Telemundo and eight on Universo.

Knowing which networks are broadcasting the matches, here are the streaming TV services that carry networks with FIFA matches:

Sling TV

Sling TVSling TV is the most-watched streaming TV service on Roku, and has made it easy to find World Cup matches by putting them all under a 2018 FIFA World Cup ribbon under the Sports tab in Roku's Sling TV app - no need to jump through the various channels looking for the next match. The matches available, however, will depend on your Sling subscription.

To get Fox broadcasts, you will need a Sling Blue subscription ($25/month with 7-day free trial), which gives you access to FS1 and to local Fox over-the-air broadcasts in select markets. Best of all, a Sling Blue subscription lets you activate the Fox Sports app on Roku and other devices, so you can stream all of the live action available there, including the Fox bonus feeds. Universo is available with the Sling "Best of Spanish TV" extra pack for $5/month.

If you just want to watch the action and don't care for English-language commentary, every Sling International package (starting at $10/month) includes all 64 FIFA World Cup games. Matches are being carried in four different languages: Arabic, Brazilian, French, and Polish. In addition to one of these feeds (French for all South Asian and European languages and Brazilian for all East Asian languages), a no commentary/natural audio version is also provided in every International package.

Hulu with Live TV

HuluHulu with Live TV ($39.99/month with a 7-day free trial) lets subscribers stream local Fox channels for much of the US and also includes FS1 and Telemundo. Hulu with Live TV also allows activation of the the Fox Sports app.

Local Fox broadcasts are available in only in 24 markets, and 34 get the national Fox feed. The Español Pack adds Universo for $4.99/month. PlayStation Vue allows activation of the the Fox Sports app.

YouTube TV

Cordcutter News Brief - Malware infects Amazon Fire TV devices, AT&T to give free TV to its wireless customers, Apple partners with Oprah, and more!

Cordcutter News BriefsIn this week's collection of recent cord-cutting news items from around the web: Android malware worm infects Amazon Fire TV devices, Amazon unveils Fire TV Cube, AT&T to give free TV to its wireless customers, Apple in a multi-year partnership with Oprah, NBC Sports app now on PS 4, Viacom confident its will be on Hulu live TV and YouTube TV, MobiTV has programmers for a new video streaming platform, and more!

"Android Malware Worm that mines Cryptocurrency is infecting Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick devices,"according to AFTV News. "The malware appears to be getting installed by apps that are being sideloaded onto Fire TV devices. It is unknown which specific apps include the malware, but it seems that apps created for the purpose of watching pirated movies or TV shows are likely how the malware infects its first device... Infected devices will become very slow to use. Loading apps will take longer than usual. This is because the malware is using 100% of the device's processor to mine cryptocurrency."

Amazon has unveiled the Fire TV Cube, which CNet calls "the love child of a Fire TV streamer and Echo speaker rolled into one boxy design." Sandeep Gupta, a Fire TV vice president, said at a briefing that "The goal here is to declutter people's lives, declutter the complexity of controlling your home entertainment system and make it easier to use." The device will be released on June 21, 2018, but is available for pre-order now.

"Comcast disabled throttling system, proving data cap is just a money grab,"says Ars Technica. "Comcast's network is now strong enough that a congestion management system isn't needed, the company says. The system has been 'essentially inactive for more than a year,' and is now disabled entirely. Yet the nation's largest cable operator still imposes data caps and overage fees in 27 states, claiming that it limits the amount of data customers use each month 'based on a principle of fairness.'"

CNBC reports that "AT&T is about to give free TV to its wireless customers.""AT&T will be launching a 'very, very skinny bundle' of television programming free to its mobile customers, Chairman and CEO Randall Stephenson told CNBC on Friday, a day after the company closed its $85.4 billion purchase of Time Warner." Called 'AT&T Watch TV,' Stephenson said that "It will be the Turner content. It will not have sports. It'll be entertainment-centered." For those who aren't AT&T unlimited wireless customers, "you can buy it for $15 a month on any platform."

Apple has announced a multi-year partnership with Oprah Winfrey. "Together, Winfrey and Apple will create original programs that embrace her incomparable ability to connect with audiences around the world. Winfrey's projects will be released as part of a lineup of original content from Apple."

The NBC Sports app is now available on PlayStation 4, NBC Sports Digital announced. The app "annually streams thousands of hours of premium content that is presented across NBC, NBCSN, Golf Channel, and Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA." The app is already available on most major devices and platforms, including Amazon Fire, Android, iOS, Xbox, Chromecast, Roku, and some smart TVs.

Plex has added a traditional grid channel guide. A recent Plex blog post states that, while currently available only on Plex Web, it should soon be rolling out to other platforms as well.

MultiChannel News reports that MobiTV has lined up programmers for a new video streaming platform. The provider of live and on-demand video delivery solutions "said more than 210 networks have signed on for a new, hosted IP video platform that will steer clear of traditional set-top boxes... "

Viacom still confident its channels will make it to Hulu live TV, YouTube TV, reports FierceCable."Viacom CFO Wade Davis is well aware that Viacom channels like Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon don't show up on Hulu with Live TV or YouTube TV, but he thinks they will eventually." Speaking at the Gabelli Annual Movie and Entertainment Conference, Davis said "We’re extremely well-represented in the traditional distributor lead virtual MVPDs, that's Sling TV and DirecTV Now. And those are really the virtual MVPDs that matter. We’d love to be on [Hulu and YouTube TV], we're in discussions with those guys all the time and we're optimistic that we're going to... make progress with some of the virtual MVPDs that we're not on.”

Fan channel for WGN shows Creature Features, Family Classics, and Bozo's Circus

Add Channel - qp9lrr9

Channel Description: Creature Cast pays homage to three shows broadcast on Chicago's WGN-TV in decades past. The channel includes re-creations of three airings of Creature Features, a show that, according to IMDB, "was introduced with a spooky voice-over, reciting a chilling poem, while a creepy montage of Universal monsters lurked on screen. The movies shown ranged from classic Universal films to fun b-grade flicks." The shows include " vintage commercials and opening narration written by original series write, Karen Verwolf." The movies featured in these re-creations are Son of Dracula (1943), Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man (1943), and Dracula (1931), but only Son of Dracula worked at the time of our review. Likewise, a listing for "Creature Features Scariest Moments - The lost 1976 TV Special," was not working.

The Creature Cast private channel lists two episodes of WGN's "Family Classics, " but only Mysterious Island, which aired in 1979, was working during our review. Three episodes of another WGN show, Bozo's Circus, dated 1968, 1977, and 1984, are also available - and all worked during our review.

Cordcutter News Brief - Best TV antennas, Pandora to modernize podcast delivery, Instagram launches long-form video hub, Crackle leaves Canada, and more!

Cordcutter News BriefsIn this week's collection of recent cord-cutting news items from around the web: The best indoor TV antennas, Pandora to modernize podcast delivery, AT&T launches skinny bundle streaming service, Crackle leaves Canadian market, Hulu users binge-watch 'The Golden Girls,' Starz comes to YouTube TV, Instagram launches long-form video hub, 'Warren Buffett's Secret Millionaires Club' debuts, and more!

TechRadar ratesthe best indoor TV antennas and identifies six "great digital TV antennas for inside your house." TechRadar "tested several current indoor TV antennas from top makers, watching to see how many channels each antenna could find, how easy it was to set up, how crisp the signal looked, the style and size, and the price and overall value." Coming in first was the $25 AmazonBasics Ultra-Thin Antenna (50-Mile Range). This antenna was said to be "cheap and effective – an excellent value."

Before buying a new antenna, though, read some OTA TV Antenna Shopping Tipsfrom Tablo. "If you want to access TV channels available in both VHF and UHF frequencies in your area, inspect the features list on the packaging or online listing of the TV antennas you’re considering, to ensure they include support for both UHF and VHF bands."

Virtual pay TV services will have around 9.2 million subscribers by the end of 2018 according to a UBS analyst, as reported by FierceCable. "Sling TV still leads the category, with parent Dish Network reporting 2.3 million users at the end of the first quarter. AT&T, meanwhile, reported 1.5 million users at the same time, while Hulu said at the end of May that it's live streaming service was up to 800,000 users."

Cheddar to debut Warren Buffett's Secret Millionaires Club, an animated children series, on Saturday, June 23, according to a press release. The series was created by and stars an animated Warren Buffett with guest appearances by animated versions of Bill Gates, Jay-Z, Shaquille O'Neal, Nick Cannon, Gisele Bündchen and Kelly Rowland. Airing on weekend mornings, the half-hour show will be available on streaming services that carry Cheddar, including Sling TV, Hulu, YouTube TV, Philo, and fuboTV.

Pandora CEO Robert Lynch, who started Sling TV, told NBC News that Pandora plans to do for podcasts what they did for music. "We have announced we're moving into podcasts and spoken word in a much bigger way. Think about podcasts today. Its about lists. It's not really personalized... [We will] use all the data science we have to promote content to you that we know will be relevant. In some ways, podcasts are still in the stone ages."

AT&T has started streaming TV service. CBS News reports that the new service, called WatchTV, is a skinny bundle of more than 30 TV channels. "WatchTV will be free for subscribers of two unlimited wireless phone plans AT&T is launching. Others can get WatchTV for $15 -- $20 less than [AT&T's streaming service] DirecTV Now, but with just half the channels."

TechCrunch reports that Starz is launching 14 channels on YouTube TV. "Starz is rolling out its 14 channels, including Starz, Starz Encore, and Starz Encore Westerns, to the Google-owned streaming service as an add-on that costs $9 per month. The network joins YouTube TV's other premium channel options, including Showtime, Shudder, Sundance Now, and Fox Soccer Plus."

The average Hulu viewer is watching 10 shows, reports Multichannel News. "Hulu said that 44% of its viewers binge at least once a week, and that the average viewer is watching ten different shows at one time, typically a mix of Hulu originals, comedies, dramas and reality shows." Among the other revelations: "Nearly 130,000 [subscribers] watched all 180 episodes of The Golden Girls in an average of two months."

"Sony is shutting down Crackle in Canada on June 28,"according to MobileSyrup. "The end of Crackle in Canada comes as Bell Media launches two new Crackle-like free, ad-supported video-on-demand (VOD) services called CTV Movies and CTV Vault, which will be part of what it calls a 'new CTV digital super-hub.'" But MobileSyrup notes that "Twitter reactions mainly range from confused to indifferent."

Instagram launches a long-form video hub, called IGTV. Videos can be up to an hour in length, and FierceCable reports that "IGTV features a mix of videos from users and professional publishers including BuzzFeed, Discovery Channel and Vice Media." VentureBeat says that IGTV "will put Instagram's content in competition with YouTube, which uses programs like YouTube Creators to support its community of video makers."

The Best Weather Channels on Roku

The Best Weather Channels on Roku Weather Underground recently removed its app from Roku, so we thought it time to revisit our Best of Roku listings in this category. The demise of WU on Roku came as no surprise considering the entire WU product line has been in decay while getting unpopular makeovers since the brand became part of The Weather Channel. The WU app on Roku, in particular, was in poor health before it got yanked from the channel store.

But former WU fans shouldn't despair. If you're looking for weather information, Roku still has you covered, with channels that provide live video reporting, current local conditions, forecasts, local and regional radar, and national weather maps.

Weather4usWeather4us - Weather4us is our top overall pick for a Roku weather app because of the detailed weather information it provides. This is the app for weather geeks. If the lack of live reporting isn't a deal-killer, you'll find a wealth of information on Weather4us, including a detailed 7-day full-text forecasts, easy access to hourly forecasts, weather alerts, and time-lapse local and regional radar. The app includes lots of NWS graphics and climate information as well. All of this is available in the free ad-supported version of Weather4us, but you can purchase an ad-free version that also includes a Roku screensaver that displays more than two dozen NWS graphics while your Roku is idle. Read our full review of Weather4us here.

WeatherNationWeatherNation - If you're looking for live weather reporting and video on demand featuring regional forecasts, WeatherNation is the channel you need. It offers a live stream of weather reporting and forecasting along with video on demand that includes Top Stories, Headlines, Top Severe, Extended Outlook, Travel Forecast, and ten regional forecasts. In addition to the 24/7 live broadcast and VOD, you can also view very 36-hour and 7-day forecasts and current weather advisories. Nearly a dozen radar images and weather maps are also available. Read our full review of WeatherNation here.

The Weather NetworkThe Weather Network - The Weather Network dropped 24/7 live reporting, and has just a handful of videos and photos. I debated including The Weather Network because it offers nothing that you won't find on Weather4us or WeatherNation, but the channel may appeal to those who are just looking for basin weather conditions and forecasts and don't want to be bothered with the autoplay video stream that WeatherNation launches with. Read our full review of The Weather Network here.

It's not one of our top picks, but you can also find weather maps and charts on the free Weather Radar private channel. Many local news channels, found in the News & Weather category of the Roku channel store, also offer local weather forecasts.

This article was original published in February 2015 but is regularly updated to reflect current channel information.

Cordcutter News Brief - Every Wimbledon match on ESPN app, Roku's successful war against piracy, CBS wins mobile rights to NFL games, eSports will surpass MLB and NHL viewership, and more!

Cordcutter News BriefsIn this week's collection of recent cord-cutting news items from around the web: Every Wimbledon match will be available through ESPN app, Roku successful in war against piracy, unethical sales tactics used to sell DirecTV Now, CBS won mobile rights to NFL games, eSports will surpass MLB and NHL viewership, World Cup boosts streaming TV services, and more!

CBS won mobile rights to NFL games. According to AdAge, "While CBS has been streaming football games to desktop computers, tablets and connected TVs for years, this season will be the first time it will do so through mobile phones. It joins ESPN and NBC Universal, which in December also announced that they extended their deals with the NFL to include mobile streaming rights of live games." CBS will also stream all games on the CBS All Access subscription service through the 2022 season.

For the first time, every Wimbledon match will be available through ESPN. According to an ESPN press release, "[t]he coverage – first ball to last ball – includes more than 500 matches from the All England Club's pristine grass courts, all available for fans between ESPN3 and the new ESPN+ on the ESPN app." Fortnight begins Monday, July 2.

Variety also reports that Internet TV services got a big boost from World Cup. "Internet-based TV services like Sling TV and DirecTV Now have seen an influx of new customers thanks to the World Cup, if new app download numbers from app intelligence specialist Sensor Tower are any indication. First-time downloads of the five leading internet TV services grew by 77 percent during the first week of the World Cup, Sensor Tower is set to report Tuesday." It remains to be seen how many of these subscribers will keep the services after the last World Cup match.

According to TorrentFreak, Roku has been successful in its war against piracy. "After Mexican courts put a ban on Roku sales in the country, the popular media player ramped up its anti-piracy efforts. According to new data released by Roku today, this response has paid off. Globally, approximately 99.5% of all "streaming hours" come from channels with no links to 'pirate organizations.'"

"Millennials Really Like Video Streaming," according to a new study by Parks Associates and reported by DSLReports. The study "unsurprisingly finds that millennials really like this whole streaming video thing. According to the group's latest survey of the American public, more than 85% of millennials subscribe to at least one streaming video service, notably higher than in other generations where streaming is popular, just not quite as popular. The survey also found that more than one-fourth of millennials subscribe to three or more OTT services, and more than half take at least two subscription OTT video services."

"AT&T Managers Reportedly Encouraged Unethical Sales Tactics to Sell More DirecTV Packages,"says Fortune. "The staffers apparently told customers they could try out DirecTV Now for a month without paying, and the salespeople would cancel their trials before they turned into paid subscriptions. In some cases, the cancellations never happened, and people started paying $35 a month for the service without having agreed to become subscribers. " The story was originally reported by Hawaii News Now, which offers much more information on this topic."

Broadcasting & Cable reports that Viacom has licensed four more series for streaming on Hulu. "Hulu said it reached a deal with Viacom that makes the service the exclusive streaming home to Daria, Nathan for You, My Super Sweet 16 and New Edition Story. Hulu, heaving up on family programming, has rights to the full library of each of those programs. Viacom recently announced plans to make new episodes of Daria."

"Goldman Sachs believes that eSports is on track to be as popular as the NFL in a couple of years"reports TheStreet.com. "In a report published Tuesday, Goldman said it sees eSports surpassing Major League Baseball and National Hockey League viewership... Goldman analysts also stated that they 'believe that eSports viewership is moving more into the mainstream, which should support a 14% audience growth for the next five years, Recently, Epic Games announced that it would set aside $100 million in prize pool for the first year of Fortnite eSports tournaments.'

Updated 'Channels' app for Fire TV devices adds DVR support for OTA Antenna channels, says AFTV News. "The big new feature with this update is full support for the Channels DVR service that was previously only available on the Apple TV. This allows owners of HDHomeRun networked tuners to view and manage recordings of OTA antenna and digital cable channels directly from their Fire TV devices."

Verizon is shutting down its mobile video service Go90, reports Variety. "The Go90 app, stocked with a mix of short-form original entertainment, live sports, and licensed TV shows, was never able to attract any kind of sizable audience and as a result struggled to book advertising dollars... Go90 failed because Verizon arguably didn’t effectively market the millennial-targeted service." The service will cease on July 31.

All-new Amazon Music app brings Prime Music to Roku

How to watch the 2018 FIFA World Cup on RokuRoku users who also use Amazon Prime Music and Amazon Music Unlimited services will be thrilled to know that Amazon has finally updated the Amazon Music channel on Roku. Actually, "updated" is an understatement - Amazon has created an entirely new app, although the old app will automatically update to the current version on your Roku devices.

The old Amazon Music channel hadn't been updated in years. You could stream only digital music that you purchased through Amazon and music that you uploaded to the now-retired cloud-based Amazon Music Storage service. Amazon Prime members had no access to the Prime Music service included in their prime membership, and subscribers to the premium Amazon Music Unlimited service were also left out.

This week, though, Amazon quietly rolled out a new channel that provides access to both services. And any tracks that you have in Amazon Music Storage are still available as well. Here are some of the highlights of the new Amazon Music channel on Roku:

  • Song lyrics are displayed on-screen while a song is playing
  • Playlist, album, song, and station recommendations based on your music preferences
  • Browse top playlists, top albums, top songs, and top stations
  • Browse new playlists, albums, and songs
  • Select music recently added or played from any device
  • Browse "My Music" by artist, album, playlist, genre, and song
  • Search for albums, artists, songs, and playlists

See our Amazon Music channel page for a full review of the new app.

Amazon Music Unlimited 30-Day Free TrialRoku has no shortage of music channels, but Amazon Music is one of the few top "premium" music services on Roku, along with Pandora and the less-popular Deezer. Spotify removed their app from Roku in December 2017, and Play Music never had a Roku presence (although a private channel did, for a time, provide access to Google Music). But those who don't use Amazon's music services can find several other well-known music services like Slacker, iHeart Radio, TuneIn, and even SiriusXM, along with independent free music channels like my favorite, SomaFM.

Cordcutter News Brief - New on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime this month, streaming stocks are on a tear, streaming TV platforms raise prices, Netflix removing online reviews, and more!

Cordcutter News BriefsIn this week's collection of recent cord-cutting news items from around the web: What's new on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime in July, streaming stocks are on a tear, live streaming services raise prices, Sling TV suspends Broadcast Extra in Univision dispute, Facebook to live-stream boxing matches, Netflix is removing online reviews, and more!

Variety coverswhat's coming to Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime in July 2018. "A healthy mix of classics and new originals are on their way to Netflix in the coming month, including films such as the original 'Jurassic Park' saga and 'The Princess Diaries...' Among the original series returning to the streaming giant are 'Orange Is the New Black' and Jerry Seinfeld's 'Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. Amazon and Hulu will acquire overlapping titles including the sequel to the hit documentary 'An Inconvenient Truth' and 'Sahara.' Exclusive inbound content to Amazon includes the 'Twilight' and 'Jaws' franchises, as well as the final season of 'The Americans.' Hulu will get several series from HGTV and Food Network, as well as movies such as 'Midnight in Paris' and 'The Glass Castle.'" See the full list of incoming titles here.

Netflix is testing a higher priced 'Ultra' plan in Europe. The Hollywood Reporter says that the high-end plan is a test" to see whether customers are willing to pay more for higher-quality high definition (HD) and high dynamic range (HDR) streams. The Ultra plans, which are reportedly being tested with Netflix customers in Germany and Italy, offer new premium plans ranging in price from €13.99 to €16.99 ($16.29 to $19.78) a month, depending on the territory and the browser being used."

"Streaming stocks are on a tear," says CNBC, "and it's not just Netflix." Boris Schlossberg of BK Asset Management and Matt Maley of Miller Tabak discuss Roku, Spotify and Pandora with Seema Mody in this CNBC video.

Bloomberg says that "Online TV Prices Are Acting Like Cable TV Prices: Heading Higher." As Digital Trends reports,"First, Sling TV raised the price of its base package last week by $5. Just a day later, DirecTV Now jacked up its price by $5, and on Tuesday, PlayStation Vue did the same, raising all of its packages by $5... Meanwhile, YouTube TV raised its price by $5 in March (ahead of the trend) while the only holdout, Hulu, already priced its base package at the new normal: $40 per month.

AdWeek explainswhy experts say it's no surprise live TV streaming platforms are raising prices."'I'm not surprised prices are being raised, and nobody in this industry should be,' said Dan Rayburn, a streaming media expert. The content licensing fees are too high to offer consumers packages at a price that makes the platforms money, Rayburn said. Instead, the larger parent companies are able to absorb the loss."

Sling TV has suspended its Broadcast Extra service, which which includes ABC, Univision, and UniMás, according to a Sling FAQ. Sling says that "Univision has blocked your channels in an effort to raise rates despite lower ratings. We're fighting for you to get the best quality content at the best value."

"AirTV is a handy cord-cutting device that few will ever use,"says FierceCable's Daniel Frankel. He calls AirTV "a very useful tool for cord cutters to receive over-the-air channels on practically any device throughout their home. But the technological concept is going to be hard to sell to consumers, particularly with a confounding Dish branding strategy that favors sticking the same name on multiple products."

"Netflix Uses Data to Drive Creativity, and It Terrifies Hollywood,"says StreamingMedia. "Netflix has a lot of data about what we like to watch... It turned to that data when it began commissioning original movies and series. It was able to make smart decisions about what genres, directors, and actors we wanted to see, and how to fund each project based on expected viewership. That approach has led to some critics... accusing Netflix of programming by algorithm, of replacing intuition, experience, and Hollywood know-how with a computer routine. To critics, the Netflix formula produces hollow results and ignores the value of the creative process."

Perhaps their heavy use of data is why Netflix is removing online reviews in August . Cnet reports that the shutdown of the desktop-only feature "is coming in stages. People will no longer be able to write their feedback on a show, similar to a Yelp review of a restaurant, by July 30. And in mid-August, people will no longer be able to read existing user reviews on Netflix either." The thumbs up or thumbs down system currently in use will remain.

Facebook to Live-Stream Boxing Matches From Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy, Variety reports. "The live boxing will be available to fans in the U.S. on Facebook Watch and globally via the Golden Boy Promotions page on Facebook... [T]he first of Golden Boy’s five live fight nights on Facebook will be Aug. 11, featuring Jesus Rojas (26-1-2, 19 KOs) defending his WBA World Featherweight title against Joseph 'JoJo' Diaz Jr. (26-1, 14 KOs) at the Avalon Theater in Hollywood. The second live bout be on Aug. 18 with light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera (21-2, 14 KOs) squaring off against a yet-to-be announced opponent at the Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem, Pa." The bouts will be streamed ad-free.
