Cordcutter News Brief - Dish suing stores selling pirate OTT boxes, only 39% go to live linear TV first, Netflix debuts new feature for binge-watching, and more!

Cordcutter News BriefsIn this week's collection of recent cord-cutting news items from around the web: Dish is suing stores selling pirate streaming boxes, YouTube TV give a free week after World Cup outage, only 39% go to live linear TV first, Netflix debuts new feature for binge-watching, will spend $12 billion on content this year, Philo now on Apple TV and Fire TV and raised another $40M, and more!

Dish Network is suing stores for selling pirate streaming boxesTorrentFreak reports that Dish "has filed a lawsuit against several New York companies that sell or distribute 'pirate' streaming boxes. The case centers around the controversial 'Shava TV' devices, which remain widely available in the US despite a $25 million court order last year."

Variety reports that "Google is offering YouTube TV subscribers a credit for one week of free service after the internet-streaming TV service went down on July 11 — right in the middle of the World Cup semifinal match between England and Croatia. 'We're really sorry for the recent YouTube TV outage during the FIFA World Cup Semifinal,' YouTube said in an email to subscribers... 'To help make this right, we'd like to give you a week of free service.'"

CuriosityStream comes to YouTube as $3 add-on, says FierceCable. The "science, technology and nature channel launched by Discovery Channel founder John Hendricks" brings "first-in-class documentaries from around the globe covering science, history, health, human interest and more."

Only 39% go to live linear TV first. New data from Hub Entertainment Research, which was reported by StreamingMedia.com, shows that "only 39 percent start out with live linear TV from a pay TV service, a decline from 47 percent last year. Today, 48 percent of viewers are more likely to start their viewing with a time-shifted or on-demand option, such as Netflix, Hulu, or a DVR."

European networks are joining forces to take on Netflix and Amazon. "Old media broadcasters in Germany and France are setting up ambitious joint national video platforms,"says The Hollywood Reporter, but asks "do they have what it takes to compete with the streaming giants? "Instead of trying to be cooler than Netflix, the argument goes, European networks might be better off playing to the middle-of-the-road viewers who prefer a home-grown cop show, or live sports, to the latest episodes of Orange Is the New Black."

Netflix debuts "Smart Downloads" feature for binges, reports Deadline. Initially announced in a Netflix blog post, Smart Downloads "will automatically delete episodes that are viewed and then download the next episode once you are connected to WiFi. The feature will only be available initially on Android phones and tablets, and is focused on episodic series, not movies or specials."

And there will be even more binge-watching content in the future; The Economist reports that Netflix will spend $12 billion or more on content this year, "more than any studio spends on films, or any television company lays out on stuff that isn't sport. Their viewers will get 82 feature films in a year when Warner Brothers, the Hollywood studio with the biggest slate, will send cinemas only 23... Netflix is producing or procuring 700 new or exclusively licensed television shows, including more than 100 scripted dramas and comedies, dozens of documentaries and children's shows, stand-up comedy specials and unscripted reality and talk shows. And its ambitions go far beyond Hollywood. It is currently making programmes in 21 countries, including Brazil, Germany, India and South Korea."

FierceCable reports that Philo has launched on Apple TV and Fire TV while raising another $40M. "With the new funding, Philo has raised more than $83 million, according to Crunchbase. That includes a $6.3 million series A round in 2013, a $10 million series B in 2015 and a $22 million series C last year."

Cordcutter News Brief - Walmart to compete with Netflix, Pluto TV to add 200+ Sony movie and classic TV titles, Craftsy relaunches as Bluprint, and more!

Cordcutter News BriefsIn this week's collection of recent cord-cutting news items from around the web: Walmart SVOD service to compete with Netflix, Roku to sell wireless speakers, Pluto TV to add 200+ Sony movie and classic TV titles, Craftsy relaunches as Bluprint, and more!

Walmart eyes subscription service to rival Netflix, Variety reports. "Walmart is in fact looking at entering the subscription-video space to compete with Netflix, Amazon and Hulu, sources confirmed — and the retailing giant is planning to launch the service through its Vudu digital-entertainment division." The sources told Variety that the subscription VOD service would launch in the 4th quarter of 2018 "with a price target of $8 per month."

Roku, Inc. announced the "Roku TV™ Wireless Speakers, the first ever speakers made exclusively for Roku TV... Because Roku controls the software in both the speakers and TV, Roku is uniquely able to provide seamless wireless setup and connectivity, optimize sound for the picture and ensure audio video sync." The speakers can be pre-ordered through Roku.com until July 23, for an introductory price of $149.99.

Despite the upcoming launch of Roku TV Wireless TV Speakers, The Verge reports that Roku's CEO said "Roku is in the ad business, not the hardware business. "CEO Anthony Wood was frank and open about his company's evolving business strategy in an interview on this week's Vergecast. 'We don't really make money... we certainly don't make enough money to support our engineering organization and our operations and the cost of money to run the Roku service,' he said. 'That's not paid for by the hardware. That's paid for by our ad and content business.'"

Pluto TV & Sony strike a deal to stream 200+ movie and classic TV titlesaccording to Deadline.com. "Sony Pictures Television and free streaming TV service Pluto TV have signed a content distribution deal that will bring Bewitched, The Blob, Starship Troopers and more than 200 other “evergreen” movie and TV titles to Pluto's library. The movies from Sony Pictures Entertainment and classic TV from Sony Pictures Television will be programmed across Pluto's thematically organized and programmed original channels."

The Wrap reports on how much the DC Universe streaming service will cost. "Warner Bros is planning to unleash the subscription service, which will include access to a number of DC Comics movies and TV shows as well as a significant rotating selection of digital comic books, for $74.99 a year beginning this fall. Warner Bros will also allow users to subscribe monthly for $7.99 once the service is fully launched."

How-to subscription video service Craftsy has relaunched as Bluprint, reports Variety. "NBCU acquired a majority stake in Craftsy in May 2017. Now the Craftsy Unlimited service is becoming Bluprint, with an expanded content lineup of 3,000-plus hours of instructional videos, priced starting at $15 per month... Bluprint — in addition to how-to videos in areas including music, writing, dance, yoga, fitness, home décor, entertaining, and kids and family — will produce original entertainment series."

Netflix has redesigned its TV interface with new navigation and full-screen trailers.TechCrunch explains that "[t]he updated design is aimed at improving navigation by way of a remote control, making it quicker to get to the content you want to watch. The change involves relocating some of Netflix's key features like the “Search” button and users'“My List” over to a ribbon menu on the left side the screen which pops out when you navigate over. Here, it has also added new shortcuts to “Movies” and “TV” to filter its catalog by films and shows, as well as a button to see what's “New.”"

"Over 5 million U.S. consumers will cut the cord in 2018" according to a survey reported by MarketWatch. "Cg42 estimates a total of 5.4 million U.S. consumers will cut the cord in 2018, resulting in a $5.5 billion loss in revenue. This compares to 4.8 million in 2017 and 3.8 million in 2016. 'As the process of finding alternative paths to content gets easier and easier, people are acting on the frustrations they have with traditional providers and leaving,' the study's lead author and cg42 managing partner Stephen Beck told MarketWatch."

Cordcutter News Brief - Antenna users should rescan channels, new OTA subchannel network to launch, man scammed out of $13k by fake Roku tech support, and more!

Cordcutter News BriefsIn this week's collection of recent cord-cutting news items from around the web: Antenna users should rescan their channels, new OTA network to launch on CBS station subchannels, fake Roku tech support scams man out of $13k, Verizon seeking Google or Apple as streaming TV provider, HGTV and Food Network may be bundled into a new streaming service, exodus from pay TV accelerates, everything coming to Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu in August 2018, and more!

Many TV stations are moving to new broadcast frequencies, so antenna users should rescan to keep getting free TV, says Consumer Reports. "Several years ago, Congress authorized the Federal Communications Commission to hold a spectrum auction, freeing up some over-the-air broadcast TV frequencies to make room for expanded wireless services. Now that the auction is complete, about 1,000 TV stations have to change their frequencies, a move that will happen over the next two years. In addition, about a dozen stations will go off the air entirely." In addition, "most stations have been adding subchannels, in addition to the main program you're tuned to. A rescan will help you capture any of those new subchannels, with programming that often includes a mix of vintage TV shows, nature programs, weather, and foreign-language programming."

Nerdist listseverything coming to Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu in August 2018. Among the recommendations: "On Friday, August 10, on Netflix, Voltron: Legendary Defender is taking viewers through hostile territory as the Paladins make some shocking discoveries about the fate of their world... The third season of Stan Against Evil is heading to IFC, but Hulu subscribers will get a chance to catch up on season two starting on Thursday, August 16. The first season of Disenchantment (Matt Groening's new Netflix series) will hit Netflix on August 17... On August 31, Amazon Prime is exploring the early days of Tom Clancy's iconic hero (Jack Ryan) as he finds himself thrust into an international mission to prevent a terrorist plot."

Weigel Broadcasting Co. announced the launch of a new Network in association with CBS Television Stations. "[T]he new multicast entertainment television network- Start TV, (will launch) beginning Monday, September 3, 2018... Start TV showcases strong and resourceful female leading characters in a lineup of contemporary and proven procedural dramas." Series will include 'The Closer,''Medium,''The Good Wife,''Crossing Jordan,''Cold Case,''Profiler' and 'The Division.' The free over-the-air broadcasts will initially have 42% coverage of U.S. TV households according to the press release.

A Lewiston, Idaho, resident was scammed out of $13,000 to a fake Roku technical support site, reports local station KLEW-TV. "The victim has a streaming media device, where you can plug it into your computer or TV and watch your favorite shows and movies whenever you want... 'He said that he had contacted a company called ROKU which he had done in the past and was able to get assistance with cleaning his computer,' said Sgt. Hill. But he needed help a second time, and this is where the story takes a turn. 'He believed that he had contacted the same company and in doing so he was transferred to a group called Get Max,' Sgt. Hill said. Somehow, the scammers convinced the 76-year-old, in order to clean his computer they needed payment in the form of gift cards. And on three different occasions. 'He was taken for over $13,499,' said Sgt. Hill. 'I wish I had that explanation, unfortunately, I don't.'"RokuGuide.com comment: This gentleman apparently contacted a scammer earlier as well, as Roku, Inc. tech support would be expected to only provide help with a Roku TV or device, not with "cleaning his computer."

Sling TV added three Argentine channels, making the streaming service the self-proclaimed leading OTT provider of South American content in the United States. "Telefe Internacional, El Trece Internacional and Todo Noticias join Sling TV's Sudamérica pack, which already features channels from Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela and more. Plus, Sling TV is the first streaming service in the U.S. to offer El Trece Internacional and Todo Noticias." Other channels in the Sudamérica pack include TyC Sports, Caracol, Nuestra Tele, NTN24, RCN Novelas, TV Venezuela, Ecuavisa Internacional, Bolivia TV, Canal Sur and Estudio 5.

Bloomberg reports that Verizon is seeking Google or Apple as 5G TV provider. "Verizon Communications Inc. is seeking to partner with Google or Apple to provide television when it launches the first superfast 5G service to homes in Los Angeles and Sacramento later this year, according to a person familiar with the situation... Using new fifth-generation wireless technology, Verizon plans to beam online services to home receivers, delivering speeds that match or exceed landline connections. The company will eventually use 5G to sell consumers internet and online TV packages to compete nationally against cable and landline services from AT&T Inc. and Comcast Corp."

The Verge says that Discovery might bundle HGTV, the Food Network, and more into a new streaming service. "Discovery is considering launching its own direct-to-consumer streaming service, according to statements made by the company's CEO, David Zaslav, at an industry event yesterday (July 26, 2017). The bundle, which would charge customers between $5 to $8 dollars per month, would encompass all of Discovery's networks — including the Food Network, HGTV, TLC, and more."According to AdWeek, though, "[t]here is no timetable yet for a potential OTT product."

"Streaming TV services hope that better ad targeting will lead to profits,"says Digiday. "Most virtual MVPDs still lose money because they pay more to carry various TV channels than what they charge customers every month. For instance, YouTube TV costs $40 per month but pays roughly $49 per month to channel owners, according to The Information. The hope is that as they pick off more consumers from traditional pay-TV, they will be able to increase ad revenue by coupling scale with advanced ad targeting."

"Exodus from pay TV accelerates despite OTT partnerships,"eMarketer declares. "According to eMarketer's latest figures, the number of cord-cutters — adults who have ever canceled pay TV service and continue without it — will climb 32.8% this year to 33.0 million. That's higher than the 22.0% growth rate (27.1 million) projected in July 2017."

TechCrunch reports that the Senate wants emergency alerts to go out through Netflix, Spotify, etc.. "Senators in Hawaii and South Dakota... just introduced a bill (the 'Reliable Emergency Alert Distribution Improvement,' or READI, act) that would 'explore' broadcasting alerts to 'online streaming services, such as Netflix and Spotify,' amongst other changes to the Emergency Alert System."

"Netflix Is So Popular in Canada, Local Media Players Want a 'Netflix Tax'’ to Level the Playing Field,"says eMarketer. "The so-called 'Netflix Tax' has become a catch-all term for the gripe that US-based digital services don't contribute to local production via taxation."

Conviva, a real-time measurement and intelligence platform for streaming TV, released a report that says that streaming TV content consumption more than doubled over the last 12 months. "'The demand for streaming TV globally is growing at a stunning rate,' said Bill Demas, CEO of Conviva. 'Roku and Amazon's Fire TV are leading the connected TV charge with growth and share of engagement...' Conviva saw new peaks in both total and concurrent plays in Q2 2018, with a record-breaking 7.9 million people streaming the France vs. Argentina World Cup match concurrently on June 30 and a total of 5.5 billion viewing hours consumed during the quarter."

CuriosityStream announced a new sponsor-supported service for free OTT access. But you don't need a Vizio TV to get this content. As noted in the article, "Pluto TV is also available for free on the web and on more than a dozen platforms including Roku, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV."

"In the U.S, 17% Get Video Solely From SVOD Services"," up from 11% in 2017, according to market research company The NPD Group, as reported by StreamingMedia.com. "While young adults are more likely to stream video, that area seems to be plateauing... While usage may have topped out for young adults, older adults are subscribing at a slightly higher rate. 'As the technology gets older and less novel, as smart TVs become more common, and as more streaming content becomes available, older consumers with more disposable income are coming on board with streaming video services, notes Ricardo Solar, president of media entertainment for NPD. Although Millennials were the first to adopt SVOD, Gen X and Boomers are now driving the growth among those subscribing to multiple services."

"Original Star Wars movies blocked from Disney streaming until 2024,"says ArsTechnica. Commenting on a Bloomberg report, ArsTechnica explains that "when Disney sold the TV broadcast rights for the original Star Wars films to Turner Broadcasting, it also sold it the streaming rights. Until 2024. And the AT&T-owned broadcaster has no desire to give them back early—at least not at a price that the House of Mouse considers palatable."

Amazon's Prime Video user interface is about to get a big upgrade, says AdWeek. Jennifer Salke, the new head of Amazon Studios, said at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour in Los Angeles that "Amazon is in the process of improving the user interface for Prime Video, which the exec admitted has been frustrating for her and the talent she works with. During a visit to Amazon's Seattle headquarters, Salke got an early look at a prototype of the upcoming interface, which she now has on a phone in her office. 'Please come see me and I'll show you how cool it is!' she said of the UI, which will arrive sooner rather than later."

According to an exclusive report by Variety, NBC Sports and PGA Tour inked a deal for a live-streaming golf subscription package. "PGA Tour Live will move from BAMTech and ESPN+ to NBC Sports Gold starting in 2019... Launched in 2015, the PGA Tour Live has been run by Disney's BAMTech Media streaming division, with select programming from the digital package available this year on ESPN+, the sports cabler's own subscription-video product. 'Moving PGA Tour Live over to NBC Sports Gold represents the next evolution of our product,' said Rick Anderson, chief media officer of the PGA Tour."

"Linear TV dominates Americans' time spent viewing and is on the rise, according to a new report from Nielsen"says Broadcasting & Cable. "The report found that adults spent a total of 5 hours and 57 minutes watching video during the first quarter. That's up from 5:46 in the Q4 and 5:27 in Q3."

Roku glitch temporarily removed Netflix, YouTube, other channels for copyright infringement

Roku glitch removes channels for copyright infringementRoku, Inc.'s war on piracy has been well-documented. Following a Mexican court order banning the sale of Roku devices in Mexico, the company has been actively shutting down Roku channels when claims are made of alleged copyright infringement. Gone are popular niche channels like XTV, USTVNow and cCloud, but nobody expected giants like Netflix, YouTube, and FoxSportsGo to get caught up in the anti-piracy crackdown. That, however, is exactly what happened on Tuesday.

For several hours, a number of users received Roku's FBI anti-piracy warning, shown below, instead of the expected content. Twitter users reported that the above channels were affected, along with Hotstar, YuppTV and Gaia. Even FandangoNow, which powers the Movie Store and TV Store on Roku's own home screen menu, was impacted.

Although this sounds like the act of hackers seeking retribution for the removal of other channels, it seems that it was a technical glitch caused by Roku's own actions. CNET reported that Roku issued a statement saying "We use that warning when we detect content that has violated copyright... Some channels in our Channel Store displayed that message and became inaccessible after Roku implemented a targeted anti-piracy measure on the platform." We can presume that Roku engineers were shutting down one site and inadvertently extended that shutdown to several legitimate channels in the process.

(Story continues below the ad.)

Roku Support first tweeted that they were aware of the problem around 9:30 pm Eastern time Tuesday, and just after midnight they tweeted "We're back! Netflix and YouTube are working along with most channels in the Channel Store." They also provide instructions for affected users to "Go to Settings> System> System update> Check now. For some channels, you may need to log in again." However, as of this afternoon some Twitter users are still reporting problems despite following these instructions. At least one user was able to resolve their issue by also restarting their Roku.

If you're having Roku problems related with the above issue, you can contact Roku support at support.roku.com or by tweeting @RokuSupport. RokuGuide.com is not affiliated with Roku, Inc. and is unable to provide technical support for your device or with any Roku channels.

How to watch the 2018 FIFA World Cup on RokuThe 2018 FIFA World Cup kicks off today in Russia, with matches taking place until the July 15th finals. If you've cut the cord and are looking for a way to watch the action on your Roku, here are your options.

First, you need to know which networks are broadcasting the 2018 matches. Fox has exclusive English-language rights and will broadcast 38 matches on the Fox network and 26 matches on Fox Sports 1. NBC Universal owns the Spanish-language broadcast rights and will air 56 matches on Telemundo and eight on Universo.

Knowing which networks are broadcasting the matches, here are the streaming TV services that carry networks with FIFA matches:

Sling TV

Sling TVSling TV is the most-watched streaming TV service on Roku, and has made it easy to find World Cup matches by putting them all under a 2018 FIFA World Cup ribbon under the Sports tab in Roku's Sling TV app - no need to jump through the various channels looking for the next match. The matches available, however, will depend on your Sling subscription.

To get Fox broadcasts, you will need a Sling Blue subscription ($25/month with 7-day free trial), which gives you access to FS1 and to local Fox over-the-air broadcasts in select markets. Best of all, a Sling Blue subscription lets you activate the Fox Sports app on Roku and other devices, so you can stream all of the live action available there, including the Fox bonus feeds. Universo is available with the Sling "Best of Spanish TV" extra pack for $5/month.

If you just want to watch the action and don't care for English-language commentary, every Sling International package (starting at $10/month) includes all 64 FIFA World Cup games. Matches are being carried in four different languages: Arabic, Brazilian, French, and Polish. In addition to one of these feeds (French for all South Asian and European languages and Brazilian for all East Asian languages), a no commentary/natural audio version is also provided in every International package.

Hulu with Live TV

HuluHulu with Live TV ($39.99/month with a 7-day free trial) lets subscribers stream local Fox channels for much of the US and also includes FS1 and Telemundo. Hulu with Live TV also allows activation of the the Fox Sports app.

PlayStation Vue

PlayStation VuePlayStation Vue ($39.99/month for Access package with 5-day free trial) includes Fox and FS1. Local Fox broadcasts are available in only in 24 markets, and 34 get the national Fox feed. The Español Pack adds Universo for $4.99/month. PlayStation Vue allows activation of the the Fox Sports app.

YouTube TV

YouTube TV ($40/ month) includes local Fox broadcasts in 84 markets the national Fox feed in 14. The services includes FS1, Telemundo, and Universo and allows activation of the Fox Sports app.

FuboTV

FuboTV ($44.99/month with 7-day free trial) includes local Fox broadcasts in 136 markets, and also streams FS1, Telemundo, and NBC Universo. Activation of the Fox Sports app is allowed.

DirecTV Now

DirecTV Now ($35/month with 1-week free trial) has local Fox channels covering much the U.S., Telemundo in several markets, and FS1. To get Universo, you will need to upgrade to the "Go Big" package ($60/month). DirecTV Now also lets you activate the Fox Sports app.

Fan channel for WGN shows Creature Features, Family Classics, and Bozo's Circus

Add Channel - qp9lrr9

Channel Description: Creature Cast pays homage to three shows broadcast on Chicago's WGN-TV in decades past. The channel includes re-creations of three airings of Creature Features, a show that, according to IMDB, "was introduced with a spooky voice-over, reciting a chilling poem, while a creepy montage of Universal monsters lurked on screen. The movies shown ranged from classic Universal films to fun b-grade flicks." The shows include " vintage commercials and opening narration written by original series write, Karen Verwolf." The movies featured in these re-creations are Son of Dracula (1943), Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man (1943), and Dracula (1931), but only Son of Dracula worked at the time of our review. Likewise, a listing for "Creature Features Scariest Moments - The lost 1976 TV Special," was not working.

The Creature Cast private channel lists two episodes of WGN's "Family Classics, " but only Mysterious Island, which aired in 1979, was working during our review. Three episodes of another WGN show, Bozo's Circus, dated 1968, 1977, and 1984, are also available - and all worked during our review.
